Acuna Stars – Medlen Struggles in Gwinnett Loss
The Gwinnett Braves were shut out 5-0 Monday night and could muster only five hits. That didn’t stop phenom Ronald Acuna from having another big night.
Acuna banged out two hits in four at bats and hooked up with Dansby Swanson to execute a nifty double play. Acuna nailed a Scranton runner at second as Swanson slapped on the tag.
Acuna’s two hits nudged his average up to .354 in exactly 100 Gwinnett at bats.
Dansby had no hits in four at bats, he’s now hitting .003 points about his 2016 Atlanta Braves batting average. Hopefully the dimmer Triple-A lights will allow the young middle infielder to relax and play to his talent level.
Gwinnett Braves starter Kris Medlen experienced another uneven night. Medlen gave up five runs on nine hits, walking one while striking out seven. Medlen’s ERA now stands at a lofty, 5.86.
Medlen fans can take heart that his minor leage ERA is about the same as the newly promoted Max Fried. The difference is that their careers are headed in opposite directions.
When September 1 rolls around, it will be interesting to see if Atlanta places Medlen on the expanded roster. The 31-year old veteran was a very popular player with the Braves and had some good years. Has he shown enough to keep the comeback going in Atlanta, or is the train at the final stop?
My guess is the Braves will punch Medlen’s ticket one more time.
